Clay R. Caroland, Managing Director
Mr. Caroland has spent 30 years alternately as investment banker, as managing general partner of venture capital funds and as an investor in and advisor to emerging businesses.  Mr. Caroland organized Corporate Development & Capital, Inc., an advisory firm he founded in 1990 as successor to Health Investors Ltd.  Health Investors was a venture capital fund he organized in 1987 to invest in emerging healthcare service businesses.  He began his investment career in 1981 in New York City as a founder and managing director of Liberty Street Capital, New York, a National Association of Securities Dealers member firm. During his time with the firm, Liberty Street managed institutional transactions exceeding $600 million for its early stage, typically privately held clients.

Mr. Caroland has been instrumental in the organization, capitalization, and ultimate sale or public offering of a number of high growth companies.  Representative companies where he was a founder, a director and instrumental in arranging the company’s capital, acquisitions and corporate development include: TPA of America, Inc.: An early employee benefits firm that effected its $20 million public offering through Bear Stearns; Omni Eye Services, Inc.: An early ambulatory surgery center company; ClinTrials Inc.: One of the first clinical research organizations to operate globally and the 2nd CRO to effect a public offering; EquiVision, Inc.: An alternate site health care business integrating dedicated surgery centers, physician practices, clinical research services, and managed care contracting; Pacific Capital, a federally licensed Small Business Investment Company with capital and commitments of $75 million; and MC Strategies, Inc.: A web based education company providing online instruction to 1 million health care professionals at 1,500 subscriber hospitals. (Mr. Caroland was a founder with board rights of the MCS online business but not of its pre existing consulting business.)

His community involvement  has included Campus for Human Development Quarterly Lunch Program serving meals to 200 homeless; West Nashville Community Development Partnership repairing homes for the economically challenged; LEAD Academy charter school (Treasurer); Nicholas Caroland Scholarship for a boy to attend Montgomery Bell Academy (Treasurer); Christ Church Cathedral Outreach grants to inner city non profits (Chairman) & Youth Program (Teacher); and the Amistad Mission orphanage for 100 children in Cochabamba, Bolivia and revitalization for the Andean village, Aramasi; Dede Wallace Foundation (Trustee); Nashville Business Incubation Center (Treasurer), and Director of Technology Transfer Vanderbilt University.

Mr. Caroland earned his MBA in Finance at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business and BA in English Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
